Jose’s journey began in the mountains of Portugal, where he worked in the fields as a child to support his family. Despite facing hardships, he never lost sight of his dreams. At 13, he ventured to Lisbon, working in the restaurant industry and facing the challenges of homelessness as a teenager. His determination led him to join the special forces in the Portuguese army.

After meeting his wife Isabel, the couple set off to the United States with minimal resources. Overcoming many challenges, Jose continued his restaurant career, eventually finding the perfect home for O’Imperial in Kearny, NJ. With hard work and dedication from Jose, Isabel, and their children, O’Imperial thrived, becoming renowned for its draft beers, port wine collection, and popular sangria.

Beyond delectable cuisine, O’Imperial is a place of cherished memories. Jose’s playful pranks and the infamous chicken leg dance brought laughter to patrons. The restaurant became a hub for celebrations, with customers forming a close-knit community. The love and loyalty displayed by the patrons reflect the warm and welcoming atmosphere fostered by Jose and his family.
